Welcome to the latest issue of The Net Impact Roadmap, bringing you valuable information and tips to improve your website. Is your website SEO compliant? You may be losing potential visitors if it is not. In this issue of the Roadmap, we discuss the top ten ways to test your website to determine if it is SEO Compliant.
1. Optimized Meta Tags
Meta tags such as the meta description and meta keywords should be unique to each web page and should provide information about the page’s content. The description tag provides information on what the page is about. The description is used by search engines when displaying a list of search result links. The keywords tag helps search engines categorize your site and helps visitors to find your site more quickly.
2. Keyword Optimized Content
The content on your site should have keywords that are unique to each page, and are the keywords or phrases that your target audience is typing in. Keyword optimized content is a quick way to make your web page easy to find and attract visitors to your site. It tells search engines that your page is associated to these keywords.
3. Keywords in URL
Another effective way to test your website’s SEO compliance is to evaluate your website’s URLs. Each page off of the home page should have a URL that is search engine friendly. Search engines factor the keywords in a URL in ranking formulas. This means the URL should have keywords in it that are appropriate to the page rather than a string of letters and numbers.
4. URL Redirect
Redirection technology can improve the user’s experience. Broken URLs can cause big problems for search engines. It is important that search engine spiders and site visitors find your web page. The redirect helps to ensure that the page being displayed is the page visitors are searching for and not an error page.
5. Text Navigation Links
Check the links on your site to see if they are linking to internal pages within your site and that they are keyword optimized. Internal links tell search engines what pages are important. Internal links also help visitors and search engine spiders navigate throughout your site with greater ease.
6. Optimized H1s and H2s
Page headings and subheads within the text on each page are important to search engines. Headings tell what the page is about. Make sure that each page has headings that are keyword optimized. These headings need to be labeled as H1, H2, etc. in the source code of each page. Many search engines place emphasis on heading tags.
Search engines check to see if your site passes validation meaning there are no errors in the HMTL or coding of the website. Browsers often differ in error correction, which can cause your page to be inconsistent across browsers. Validating your site can improve your website’s quality and appearance when viewed by visitors using different browsers. To test your site, contact us for a validation error report.
8. ADA Compliance
The American Disabilities Act is making the web more accessible for the disabled. Software and hardware devises make it easier to provide information by converting text into speech and making audio readable. Text-based script must be provided in order for devices to read the information on the page. A website must provide text that is equivalent to the graphics, videos, or advertisements present on a website in order to make sure the user can fully understand the information. To see if your website is accessible contact us for an ADA compliance report.
9. XML and HTML Sitemaps
Another important way to make sure your website is effective is to have an updated XML and HTML sitemap. Sitemaps allow you to inform search engines about the URLs on your website. This increases the likelihood that search engine spiders will crawl these pages and they will be included in search indexes.
10. Submit Site
Make sure your website is submitted to the major search engines when changes are made. Submitting your website does not guarantee that your site will rank well, but it does ensure that search engines know your site exists. Getting your website listed in directories such as DMOZ and Yahoo are also ways to help get indexed in search engines because search engines often use directories for results.
